The future of the LMS

I am interested in discussing the future of the LMS. My thinking follows along these lines....

Companies are either going to need a complete talent management system that includes a learning delivery tool (LMS) or they are going to decide that what they really need is a bare bones inexpensive solution that just delivers content and reports on results. Then manage their talent with a different tool.

I see part of the future of learning in the corporate world as: Enabling people to access information to construct their own learning environments. In order to do this, organizations will have to rely on individuals who have expertise in organizing information in a way so it can be used for learning. Hence the role of an instructional designer/organizational information designer will be instrumental in facilitating this. In this environment the LMS will still play a significant role but will be in the background in terms of a learner’s experience, while the importance of handheld devices, information management systems and personal learning spaces will play a much more important role.
